Left Benevento en route for Capua [see map] 2hrs journey towards Naples. Again into tents. This is the largest camp in Italy. Red Cross parcels 1 per man every 7 days. Our joy was complete when the day following our arrival we were issued with a Canadian parcel between 2 men to last 3 days. Contents which don’t vary – 1lb butter, 1lb jam, 1lb dried milk, 12oz bully, 10oz luncheon pork, 1lb biscuits, 7oz raisins, 6oz prunes, 4oz cheese, 5oz chocolate, 40z tea or coffee, 4oz sugar, 8oz tin salmon, 3.5oz tin sardines and some salt. This parcel made a tremendous difference to our vitality. Jack Minshull went into isolation as a positive diphtheria and I commenced to share with Peter Orchard, which association has proved a very happy one. Although housed in tents the days slipped by very happily and we were able to augment our ration issue very nicely. Some of our efforts included two very fine Yorkshire Puddings and a Birthday cake to celebrate Peter’s birthday. The cake was a super effort. Ingredients – 7oz loaf, ½ yorkshire pud mixture, butter, sugar, and seedless raisins. Rations issued- 7.30 am coffee, sugar. 11.30 Bread, cheese or meat soup. (Soup very poor). 4.30 Rice or macaroni stodge ( also rather tasteless). The bread here is very small and very heavy being made from a flour other than wheat. I personally think it is made from Chestnut flour. We lived very well here for a fortnight being able to get a little extra bread by various acts of barter. Had a hot shower and a de-louse which was most inefficient. Guards and officers here also very friendly.
